Pets and Snakes

Spring has sprung, weather is warming and with warm weather out comes the snakes from hibernation, hungry and looking for food!

Rural living is a wonderful lifestyle, with large parcels of land comes an increase risk of crossing paths with snakes for us we back onto a heavily wooded creek, a nice attractive water source for snakes.

We are sharing some tips to reduce the risk of your pets encountering snakes this season.

Do you clean up your properties for fire season? The answer should be YES!

The same should apply to reducing the risk of snakes in and around your property.

In this post we are sharing some do's and don'ts to reduce the risk of an encounter or worst case scenario your pet being bitten.

What can I do to reduce the risk?

Snakes are attracted to water sources, place a water source on the outer edge of your property
Keep your yard tidy and grass mowed especially around areas where pets actively play
Minimise vermin (mice) numbers with pet friendly methods
Encourage birds such as Magpies and Kookaburras to stay as these a predatory birds

Other handy tips?

Avoid places where long grass is present
Walk dogs on the leash when outside of your property
Focus on where you are walking
Recall is an important command to teach your fur baby

What do I do if I encounter a snake?

Stay away and maintain a safe distance (at least 4 metres)
Keep an eye on the snake and contact your local snake catcher
Remember don't panic
Most snakes are protected species, so don't harm the snake or attempt to catch it

Symptoms of Snake Bites:

Dogs will show symptoms immediately where as cats can take several hours
Cats look for a funny walk or paralysis
Dogs will shown symptoms of anaphylactic reactions i.e. vomiting then collapsing, then periods of recovery and repeat reactions
Bruising around the bite site and red wine coloured urine
Different snakes will cause different reactions for more information speak to your vet or conduct some research online.

In the Event of a Snake Bite?

Need to immediately immobilise your fur baby to slow down the spread of venom
Call your vet clinic or emergency vet
Get to the vet as soon as possible, remember safety first
If possible ID the type of snake i.e. Eastern Brown

It's important to remember that snakes are not aggressive until they feel threatened, that's when they become defensive and reactive.

Stay calm and safe this snake season.

NEW FAMILY ADDITIONS - FOUR LEGGED FUR BABIES

Woof! Woof! to all our local fur baby families from the Buddy’s Bites Team - Kerri, Matt, Mikayla, Bailey, Oakey & our newest family member Buddy.

Since our last article we have a new four-legged fur baby in our house and store!

Talk about re-education (for the adults), late night toilet trips, keeping things above ground height, out of reach of little paws and jaws.

So! In this edition we thought it fitting to share some simple tips and insights from our experience on introducing a new puppy into your family.

Well behaved dogs do not happen by accident. Time, patience, and love needs to be invested in your four- legged family member. So where to start?

Socialisation
Toilet Training
Feeding & Nutrition
Grooming
Positive Training
Bite-inhibition
Crate Training

Puppies undergo developmental changes at rapid rates. Critical socialisation begins around 4 weeks and ends somewhere between 14 & 16 weeks.

Short walks are a great during this period. Always use positive reassurance and reward behaviour with small healthy treats. We are so lucky to have some great walking trials around Littlehampton and the surrounding area.

It is important that you limit your puppy from exposure to dog parks and walking trials with a high volume of dogs until your pup has had their vaccinations. We recommend you discuss with your vet on when it is safe.

Mental exercise and stimulation are the key part of development. Introduce different toys suitable for your four-legged friend. Snuffle mats and LickiMats are both good tools to distract, redirect behaviour and channel anxiety.

Toilet training requires persistence, consistency, positivity, and a plan. Choose the spot. A grassed or lawn area. Remember this spot will become the go to place for your pup. Use cue words i.e. toilet. using short words and the same words are the best way to train. Use healthy small treats as reassurance to maintain a positive experience for your puppy.

Your pup needs to become accustomed to new sounds around the house and in your yard sooner rather than later. Loud noises like lawn mowers, hair dryers, vacuum cleaners etc. We suggest you give them the opportunity to sniff and experience the sounds with positive reactions.

New experiences like grooming should be introduced from around 8 weeks, do not over bath your baby as it is not good for their skin. Use suitable combs/brushes for your puppy’s coat. Ensure you use puppy products that are accredited. We prefur all natural. There are several great grooming salons in the area.

Training should be done in small burses of 5 to 8 mins. Touch, sit, drop and recall are the basic starters.

We highly recommend from our experience you and your puppy attend Puppy School. Mount Barker Veterinary Clinic and Nairne Vet both run classes, great way to start socialisation outside of the home.

Recommendation is to enrol from around 9 weeks of age, first vaccinations are required. These classes are usually 4 lessons, once a week for 4 weeks.

Our biggest tips of having a new puppy, is it should be fun, it takes time and dedication.

There is a-lot of information available, you can research just about any topic on the internet. Your local pet stores can also recommend and assist to help.

Introducing out newest family member, Buddy.

We've been thinking about adding to our family for a little while, as Oakey has been asking for a little brother. When we came across Buddy, we instantly fell in love and knew he was the perfect fit for our family.

He's fun and playful, with a bit of seriousness about him. We are looking forward to introducing him to you all personally.

Buddy's Bench

Buddy’s Bench will bring smiles and be touched by many paws

Buddy's Bites is proudly named after Buddy. Unfortunately we as the new owners, never had the opportunity to meet Buddy, he was an amazing dog with some very special traits.

We kept the name "Buddy's Bites" in honour of Buddy when we purchased the business in late August 2020.

Buddy was born on the 8th October 2008 and sadly passed on the 3rd June 2020. Much loved border collie of Shaylee the previous owner of Buddy's Bites.

In memory of Buddy we will be installing a park bench instore. The bench will be a tribute to Buddy. "Buddy's Bench".

Buddy is forever watching over us and our store. RIP Buddy.

The Buddy's Bites Team would sincerely like to thank all our loyal, new and return customers for supporting us in our first 2 weeks of trading as the new owners.

We have been overwhelmed with preorders which is fantastic! It helps us with supply and demand. Pre-ordering guarantees quality fresh products available for all our fur baby families.

We are excited about our new look website which is currently undergoing a revamp. Customers will be able to order and pay online when we go live later this week with all our products listed in the online store. Our loyalty card has been a huge hit with customers.

Extended trading hours are a clear winner and we will continue to look at further opportunities to increase our trading hours. We are moving to new look packaging for some of our fresh and frozen products, customers love this concept as makes for easier to store at home in your fridge and freezer. Hello from the Buddy's Bites team.

Buddy’s Bites is under new ownership. Local Nairne long term residents Matt & Kerri along with their four-legged fur baby Oakey will be taking the reins as of September 1.

It’s business as usual. We pride ourselves on continuing to specialise in 100% fresh, natural preservative free pet food, along with healthy Australian made treats for our fur baby families.

We are excited to introduce extended trading hours for our customers.
